Adoption vs Fostering

Becoming an adoptive or foster family is not a decision to be made lightly.

This special population of youth and families, as well as the system of care that surrounds them, will be challenging for any family to navigate and support. No matter the path chosen by those considering welcoming a foster youth into their home, that choice must be youth-centered. The saying that “love is all they need” is where the journey begins. Love isthe foundation on which healing can begin, but more is needed.

Long-term, adoptive and foster families must be prepared to face challenges along the way. It is vital for families to build a community around themselves, including providers of mental and behavioral health services, to help navigate the evolution of their trauma as they age. Committing to a youth-centered approach and changing your own lives to meet your child’s needs will give them a chance to truly thrive. Transforming a child’s life, in even the smallest of ways, will have a lasting impact on not only their lives but the lives of their families, their children, and generations to come.
